Think about that for a minute—it means you can back up an entire hard drive or 12 , remove it, and still have unlimited access to the files through your online account forever.
This is one of my favorite features to see in any online backup plan so SOS supporting this is a big plus in my book. It wasn't slow and it didn't lock up my computer during the process. This experience is never the same for everyone because it's the available bandwidth you have at any given time, as well as your computer's specs, that determines how efficient a backup can run. Files and whole folders can be restored through the SOS desktop program or via their website, which means you can restore your files from the same computer you backed them up from or you can download them to any computer you're using by just logging into your account on the web.
Flexibility is good. Before you restore video, audio, and image files, you can preview them in your browser to make sure it's the right file that you want, which is definitely a plus. Some files can even be streamed from the mobile app, giving you on-demand access to your media from anywhere. Sharing files is a neat feature with SOS Online Backup that works from both the mobile app and the web app. Just enter the email address of the person you'd like to share a file with and they'll get a link to download the file, without having to log in. Managing your shared files is really easy, too.
Just visit the dedicated View Shares section in your account to revoke access at any time. As I briefly mentioned in the feature list table above, continuous backup is only available in SOS Online Backup for select files. With other popular cloud backup services, every file is backed up nearly immediately after they've been changed, a fantastically important feature for obvious reasons.
With SOS Online Backup, however, you must locate any file you want to be backed up continuously yourself, right-click on the file, and then select Enable LiveProtect. Not only that, you can't even turn on Live Protect for an entire drive, or folder of files, at once. SOS doesn't offer a true continuous backup option for the entire backup set, unlike many of its competitors.
For crucial files, you can right-click on the option in the backup set folder tree and choose Enable LiveProtect. When you do this, a new version of the file is automatically uploaded to online storage every time you change the original. Other services, like IDrive and Acronis True Image, make this much simpler, and we would like to see this feature reworked.
When the backup process starts, a new dialog pops up, showing its progress and even the currently processing file. You can pause the process, but there's no estimate of how long the whole operation will take. Advanced options let you throttle the data usage by megabytes per day, in case you have ISP data limits.chearabigse.tk
SOS Online Backup
In the latest version, SOS introduced true bandwidth throttling, as opposed to the data cap methods it used previously. The desktop application on Windows is functional, but there are design aspects that need improvement. For example, the primarily gray interface looks dated, and most of the windows don't resize. Additionally, the font in the Advanced Options menus is difficult to read. We like the main interface's prominent Remaining Storage indicator and Backup Now button.

When you click the wrench icon to the right of the File and Folder header, it takes you through the same backup wizard as when you first set up the software, each and every time. We wish you could access specific options more easily. New to the latest version is an Advanced Folder Backup option, which sits directly below. This module lets you set up folders on different backup schedules and specify some new retention policies, such as Replicate or Forever Save. You can even set files to stay online temporarily or schedule their local deletion and subsequent upload to cloud storage.

Also, it only presents a notification area icon while backups are running. Other services leave an always-accessible icon here. Next, we calculated the average time it took to complete the process. We used PCMag's fast Mbps up corporate internet connection so that bandwidth wouldn't be the limiting speed factor. SOS Online came in close to the top of our backup speed test, with a time of 1: These speeds could factor into your service decision if you have many gigabytes of files to upload. Results for the whole set of online backup providers tested are shown below.
SOS's recovery tool is highly functional and one of its best features, although, again, its design is dated. You can search for particular files, browse a folder tree, or simply restore your entire backup to the My SOS Restores folder, with the original folder structure optionally preserved. You can recover all versions of a file by selecting a simple checkbox or use a calendar to get files back from a particular day.
You can also remove files from your backup in this section by right-clicking on an item and hitting Delete. One of SOS's claims to fame is that it saves all previous versions of all backed up files.
Most other services that save versions limit them to or as few as six previous versions Acronis True Image or in some cases 12 Carbonite. We tested SOS Online's ability to save all versions of a file by repeatedly editing and saving a Microsoft Word document that was protected by LiveProtect. In the recovery dialog, there's a drop-down arrow in the file's Date field that gave access to all the earlier versions. Note that you have to refresh the Restore list before those prior versions show up.
SOS's legacy web portal, called the Centralized Management Dashboard, is still accessible from the desktop interface at the time of this writing. Although it presents an overwhelming amount of information, it works quickly and extends the functionality of the desktop experience considerably. The main dashboard displays an overview of completed backups, account details and access to your cloud data. Additional features include a Monitoring tab, which shows the backup status and detailed information on every linked device, and a Reporting section, which lists the details of every backup task ever performed.
This console also allows remote control for backups on other devices along with remote device location and wiping, a nifty tool not found in many services. The PC service may well be better but the repeated failure of web-based file access was worrying, it gave me no confidence at all in the backups.
CrashPlan performs really well in comparison, I would recommend that as a much better mac alternative. I tried this product for months and have never been happy. It runs constantly and never finishes.
Strengths & Weaknesses
I have report after report that it failed. I was told to let him configure it for me so it would properly, when someone did configure it in the first place from SOS. Just a bad product, annoying and very non-user friendly. When emailed to ask why, they refused to email me an answer. There was a transition period when the owner changed with very poor support, but lately I must say their support has gotten quite better. I recommend this service. I can only speculate that their change to unlimited was just a customer grab they are now doubling back on.
I got screwed when my first aniversary renewal came around. My unlimited plan was reduced to GB. My renewal came up as well. I am uninstalling, closing my account and in the market for a new service.
I can see having an amazing starting offer and some kind of increase, even double lets say. But 8 times the cost for reduced service. I had been a customer of their since last one year. Had backed up over 11 TB of files in last one year mostly security camera footages. I called them today to find out what will happen to my plan. I asked why, and he said that was deadline for every old user. I said okay, so I have till 30th November to download 10 TB of files?
This is simply called a scam or high jacking. I loose my files and I can not even download them before the renewal date. About a year into my subscription with them, I started getting emails and phone calls saying that I need to get in touch with them because I have to switch my account to their new subscription structure and that the unlimited storage is no longer available.
What a scam! It was is a baiting scam. They know that once you sign up with them, it is not easy to switch to another provider. And, what happened to the 3-year subscription I signed up for? The price seems relatively fair when you sign up, but, if you select the wrong plan, and need to buy additional storage, the price for the additional is absolutely extortionate. I signed up for SOS Online backup three years ago. When my three-year service agreement was set to expire, I was contacted numerous times by an extremely aggressive salesperson. I responded in writing stating that I did not wish to renew my service, as I had recently purchased a new laptop computer with alternative cloud storage.
I disputed the charge through Capital One Visa and received a note confirming that the charge would be reversed. Half a month later, the charge has not been reversed.
My hypothesis is that the cloud storage market has changed, and SOS Online Backup is having problems competing in the new landscape. The aggressive upselling at renewal is a red flag. The unauthorized processing of renewals against customer wishes is fraudulent. Cloudwards has rated over 60 cloud storage services. We find pCloud to offer the best value for money. Try it now.
